How to Boost Our Nation’s Global Competitiveness
Bowling Green, Ohio – April 9, 2009 Skycasters and Bowling Green State University’s Department of Marketing believe giving university students a chance to practice their classroom skills in the real world gives our nation a fighting chance in the global economy.
On Tuesday, April 7th, 12 Bowling Green State University marketing students concluded their participation in Google’s Online Marketing Challenge, and Skycasters, an Akron, Ohio, company providing schools, hospitals and businesses across the nation with broadband satellite Internet, challenged the students to wage an online advertising campaign related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The 12 BGSU students, led by Dr. Greg Rich, Chairman of the university’s Department of Marketing, formed their own firm, FalcoLytics, as part of a class assignment. “The name FalcoLytics,” Dr. Rich said, “is derived from the name of the school’s athletics teams, the Falcons, and from the fact that Internet advertising is much more analytical than other forms of advertising.”
Skycaster’s president, Mike Kister, a BGSU grad, and a member of the school’s Marketing Advisory Counsel since 1997, visited Dr. Rich’s class Tuesday to kick off the four-week campaign. “This is Skycasters’ chance to contribute to the nation’s competitiveness through education,” said Kister. “FalcoLytics will compose their ARRA Broadband campaign, and run it for 3 weeks. It’s Win-Win-Win: Skycasters helps stimulate the economy through these students; FalcoLytics gets real-world experience; and BGSU gets another arrow for its Marketing Department quiver.”
Part of President Obama’s objective for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is to spread broadband Internet access across the United States. Few companies are as well positioned as Skycasters to give individuals, communities and businesses who are off the broadband grid, world class access to distance learning, commerce and health care information. And Google AdWords can be the best advertising medium on the world wide web – and the most difficult to understand.
“It’s learning how to write ads,” said Mike Kister, “and how to read the analytics. This kind of partnership is what’s key to getting this Nation back on its feet. Companies partnering with schools and other companies. E Pluribus Unum. The students get it.”
