WildBlue Satellite Internet

WHAT IS WILDBLUE?
Wildblue is new Satellite Internet technology that has been expected to launch for 2 years. Wildblue is using spot beam technology.

WHAT ARE SPOT BEAMS?
The Wildblue system uses Spot Beam technology, which means that instead of the satellite beaming down one huge “Footprint” onto North America, it is broken up into smaller isolated circles.

HOW FAST IS WILDBLUE?
Depending on the package you buy, Wildblue's is offering up to 1.5Mbps download and up to 256kbps upload. The "up to" part is the key that many satellite executives are watching closely.

CAN I INSTALL THE WILDBLUE DISH?
No, only a certified Wildblue installer may install a satellite sytsem. All two way satellite dish installations are governed by the FCC.

WHAT SATELLITE DOES THE WILDBLUE SYSTEM USE?
Anik 2 which was one of the first KA band satellites launched for consumer use.

HOW DOES THE FAIR ACCESS POLICY WORK?
The Wildblue Network is a shared network, which means that you are sharing the Satellite Data Stream with many other users. They have a Fair Access Policy which will throttle your system the following month if you breach a certain threshold in a given month.

MAY I USE VPN OVER WILDBLUE?
VPN over Satellite is a bit tricky because of the inherent latency of satellite Internet connectivity. VPN likes to talk back and forth between the Client Computer and the Host Server it’s trying to connect to. With Satellite Latency of about .7 seconds, this “back-and-forth” communication bogs many VPN’s down.

MAY I USE THE WILDBLUE SERVICE WITH VOIP (Telephone)?
Yes and no. VOIP (Voice Over IP) is very achievable and very economical to use if you have no other means of voice communication. Many people do find out in order to use a VoIP device they require true broadband connectivity.

CAN I PLAY ONLINE GAMES WITH WILDBLUE?
Actually, because of satellite latency, real-time game play is not satisfactory because reaction time is delayed by more than ½ a second. More than enough to give you a huge disadvantage on most online games that require instant reaction times.

CAN I STREAM VIDEO?
The speeds of Wildblue are fast enough that you may be able to stream video, or radio, or other high bandwidth usage items. However, the Fair Access Policy only allows your account to download a certain number of Gigabytes before your service slows.
