SuperVPN Gives Skycasters’ Customers a Hybrid Solution

Akron, Ohio – July 17, 2009 Virtual private networks, or VPNs, afford companies who use the Internet for data transfer security approaching that of a leased line, without a leased line’s expense. Skycasters has long provided its broadband satellite Internet clients various VPN solutions, including the maximum security end-to-end VPN, for their satellite communications.

However, end-to-end VPN’s max security has its costs. The VPN connection’s added layer of encryption on the space segment contributes to performance degradation. “VPN over the space segment is redundant security,” said Skycasters’ Senior Network Engineer Kelly Olsen. “The space segment already has complex encryption inherent in the satellite TDMA security.”

The satellite connection’s time division multiple access, or TDMA, is layered in with data coding that includes modem IDs, latitude longitude, and IP mask. These layers of data flow optimization and security, in addition to the frequency shifting where a customer’s data may switch frequencies a hundred times each second, renders the data accessible virtually only to the customer.

Skycaster’s hosted SuperVPN, more than twice as fast as comparable satellite VPN services, gets a boost in speed from eliminating the use of VPN on the space segment. Instead, customer satellite traffic is routed via a private network (VLAN) to a dedicated VPN gateway at the NOC, which in turn establishes the VPN tunnel to the customer’s data center. Because it’s a hosted solution, there’s no equipment to buy or manage. Skycasters does it all.

“It’s truly a hybrid solution,” Kelly said. “SuperVPN solves the VPN-over-satellite performance problems while maintaining the highest levels of security. The solution provides unprecedented cost effectiveness for networks with as few as one remote satellite site. TDMA and session-key encryption ensure that the space segment is fully secure. IPsec VPN across the Internet keeps the terrestrial segment fully secure.”
