Akron, Ohio – August 4, 2010 Eight years as SATCOM asset maintenance supervisor in the Marine Corps in Okinawa and Camp Pendleton, California, and Matthew McCann is jumping right into assisting at one of northeast Ohio’s fastest growing satellite communications teleports. If Matt’s first days on the job are any indication, his hands will be full.
“The day before I started,” Matt explained, “a solar storm erupted on the Sun.” Sounding disappointed, Matt continued, “as geomagnetic storms go, this is pretty mild. We don’t expect any SATCOM issues, but we’re ready for anything.”
“This operation is growing pretty quickly,” RF Engineer Mario Tomaselli said, “and the system complexity requires high attention to detail and quick response – on a 24/7 basis. Matt’s coming aboard is pretty timely. We’ve got daily testing and maintenance schedules, and frequent RF safety training classes. It’ll be great to have the staffing redundancy to add to the systems redundancy we’ve built into the teleport.”
Matt’s training has included radio equipment and antenna construction through the Marine Corps Institute, Special Operations Forces Deployable Node (a VSAT satellite terminal, laptop and encryption device) at the Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Bayside Facility in Florida, and various SATCOM operator courses at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, and at Twentynine Palms, California, with honors.
Matt’s duties will include 24 hour surveillance of the teleport operations through reports, video, and cell phone message alerts; testing and maintenance of RF equipment, including the three General Dynamics Vertex 6.3 meter teleport antennas, and any future antenna installations; and systems planning for equipment augmentation.
