Disaster Recovery VS Business Continuity

What is the difference between Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity?

In actual usage, it can get confusing—companies often use the terms interchangeably.

One ‘textbook’ definition found is:

Business Continuity Planning – A plan to continue Business Operations
Disaster Recovery Planning – A plan for accessing required technology and infrastructure after a disaster.

At Skycasters, we spend time with Emergency Management folks and know how much they love Table Top Exercises. From ready.gov, “Table Top exercises are discussion-based sessions where team members meet in an informal, classroom setting to discuss their roles during an emergency and their responses to a particular emergency situation. A facilitator guides participants through a discussion of one or more scenarios.” Business Continuity preparedness is often done this way.

On the other hand, Disaster Recovery Planning is sometimes a more hands-on experience where, for example, a portion of communications is cut off and back-up technologies are expected to take over.

Regardless of the terms, we see it as “When the primary link goes down, the satellite link takes over.” Even though Satellite Internet can seem like an ‘Alphabet Soup’ of acronyms (LEO, GEO, MEO, VSAT), we take the time to understand your capacity requirements and the applications you will be using. From there, we can help you select which of our service plans best suits your needs.
