How PTMP Interoperability Works

Most resorts and travel destinations use a mix of fixed (wired) and wireless (Wi-Fi or WiMAX) networks to connect their guests to the Internet. Skycasters’ point-to-multipoint solution offers PTMP interoperability that is fully compatible with any distribution architecture you choose to provide reliable, super-fast Internet service to your guests.

The first step to PTMP interoperability is to select a suitable site location for your satellite backhaul antenna. The antenna will need to be located near a building that includes an enclosed area where the various pieces of sensitive electronics will be located. This area needs to be temperature controlled and have an adequate power supply and back up. No need to build a new area, unless you want to—usually an existing office works great for this purpose. The satellite modem will be housed there along with the equipment required for PTMP interoperability with your local distribution architecture.

The satellite backhaul antenna will be permanently mounted near ground level or on a flat roof of the building. Typical antennas are either 1.2m or 1.8m in diameter and use 3w to 6w BUCs (block upconverters) for transmission back to Skycasters’ network operations center (NOC). The antenna will typically be enclosed in a privacy fence to keep non-technical personnel a safe distance away. Space and budget permitting in your interoperability plans, a second satellite backhaul antenna can be installed for redundancy.

If each guest room is already wired with Ethernet cables, we can tie the PTMP system into that network. In addition, most travel destinations like to provide wireless access to their PTMP system as well. Most wireless antennas have about 1,000 foot (300m) range—less through walls—so you can usually assume 2 antennas per floor of your guest buildings, with additional antennas to cover the grounds.

PTMP interoperability may sound daunting, but it isn’t. Besides, we’re Skycasters and customer service is our priority. We will work side-by-side with you to design the best system for your needs, and we will even find someone to install it for turnkey PTMP interoperability that only Skycasters can provide.
