How Does VoIP Work?
Voice travels as data packets through the Internet. Just a simple microphone and speakers connected to a computer is all you need. However, there are dedicated VoIP phone systems or a standard residential phone can be used with an ATA adapter.

Latency Under 700 ms
Common to all satellite providers, a round trip transmission to a satellite in space accounts for approximately 500 milliseconds of latency. The difference is how much latency is added by the ISP. We do not oversubscribe our network like other providers do, so data packets do not pile up. Skycasters satellite VoIP incorporates core-switching technology into our all-Cisco backbone to reduce latency in our NOC. Total round trip latency is typically under 700 milliseconds (and often under 600). This lets your VoIP calls sounds like a cell phone conversation and not a walkie-talkie.
Packets Arrive in the Correct Order
Jitter is the satellite Internet latency that fluctuates significantly over a relatively short period of time. It makes normal conversation difficult and is caused by packets backing up in the system. Skycasters employs TDMA methods that ensure packets are evenly placed in time slots across a frame. In addition, we use static and dynamic Jitter Buffer techniques giving you a virtually jitter-free experience on a VoIP call.

Packet Retention (TCP vs UDP)
Data transfers like Web surfing, email, and file sharing are TCP, which employs acknowledgement packs. If there is a data loss, the lost packets can be automatically resent. VoIP traffic is UDP rather than TCP. UDP does not use acknowledgements so lost packets cannot be retransmitted automatically. In order to ensure quality calls, we have to use other techniques.
Packets on Skycasters networks are transmitted with extremely low Bit Error Rates (10-9), which minimizes packet loss. What that means to you is clear voice reception and a great satellite Internet VoIP experience.
